Open Option scheme for immediate open access to articles in Society for General Microbiology journals

Authors can now choose to make their papers freely available online in the four journals published by the SGM, without access restrictions, immediately on online publication.

This Open Option is available for £1500 (plus VAT where applicable). This fee is in line with those being charged by most other commercial and not-for-profit publishers and represents a level of income that would allow the Society to maintain the high quality of its publications while still funding its many activities to promote the science of microbiology, in the absence of income from library journal subscriptions.

In some cases, your research funder may be willing to pay this fee. The SGM welcomes the acknowledgement from these funders that, as well as funding an enormous increase in global research output, they have a responsibility to contribute to the costs of publishing this material. SGM is pleased to make available this opportunity for wider dissemination of research findings; this builds on over 8000 articles in SGM journals that have already been made freely available.

If you do not pay the Open Option fee, your paper will still be published in the usual way, and it will be subject to the current access controls. This means that the full online version will be available only to institutional subscribers initially and will be freely available without a subscription 12 months after publication in Microbiology, Journal of General Virology and Journal of Medical Microbiology and 24 months after publication in International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

If you pay the Open Option fee, you may also deposit the PDF of the published version of your paper in PubMed Central or other online repositories at the time of publication with no access delay period. Authors who do not pay the Open Option fee should consult our policy on self-archiving.

If you wish your published paper to be available through our Open Option scheme, please complete the Open Option order form and return it to the Editorial Office with your payment as soon as possible after your paper is accepted for publication.
