Minute 2. Record of attendance
The acting Chairman welcomed and introduced the members of the subcommittee. The members present were P. Schumann (acting Chairman), H.-J. Busse, P. Kämpfer, E. Stackebrandt and K. Suzuki. In addition, the meeting was attended by A. Yokota. Apologies for absence were received from the members L. I. Evtushenko, O. R. Gvozdyak and M. Takeuchi.
Minute 3. Approval of agenda
The proposed agenda was approved.
Minute 4. Acting Chairman's introductory remarks
P. Schumann gave a short survey of the history of ICSB subcommittees responsible for organisms that currently belong to the suborder Micrococcineae, on attempts to propose minimal standards for these organisms and on the rationale for establishing a subcommittee on the taxonomy of the suborder Micrococcineae. The proposed name Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of the Suborder Micrococcineae was approved by the members.
Minute 5. Election of officers
The acting Chairman nominated L. I. Evtushenko as Secretary and presented her written acceptance of candidacy. P. Schumann was elected Chairman and L. I. Evtushenko was elected Secretary in absentia. Both officers were elected unanimously.
Minute 6. Changes in membership
Resignation has been received from M. Takeuchi, who had agreed in March 2000 to join the proposed subcommittee. The subcommittee members expressed their regret at missing her valuable expertise. A. Yokota was elected to membership by the members unanimously in order to fill the vacant position left by M. Takeuchi. [The membership of A. Yokota was approved by the Secretary for Subcommittees of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes on 12 September 2002].
Minute 7. Minimal standards for description of new taxa of the suborder Micrococcineae
The list of genera of the suborder Micrococcineae, the table of chemotaxonomic characteristics of the genera and the proposal of characteristics for minimal standards, circulated prior to the meeting to all subcommittee members, were discussed. Detailed comments received from L. I. Evtushenko were included in the discussion and characteristics essential for the description of novel genera and species of the suborder were selected. It was agreed that a complete set of chemotaxonomic characteristics should be recommended for the description of new genera within the suborder Micrococcineae, and H.-J. Busse, P. Schumann, K. Suzuki and A. Yokota will be responsible for the part of the minimal standards on chemotaxonomy, including determination of certain chemotaxonomic characteristics missing from the descriptions of several genera. P. Kämpfer and E. Stackebrandt will take responsibility for the part of the minimal standards on phylogeny, physiology and morphology. Although the phylogenetic position of the genus Brevibacterium is not unambiguous, it was decided by the subcommittee to include this genus within its remit.
Minute 8. Current membership
The current voting membership of the subcommittee is H.-J. Busse, L. I. Evtushenko (Secretary), O. R. Gvozdyak, P. Kämpfer, P. Schumann (Chairman), E. Stackebrandt, K. Suzuki and A. Yokota.
Minute 9. Next meeting
The next meeting will be held at the next congress of the International Union of Microbiological Societies, to be held in July 2005 in San Francisco, USA.
